WPS - end of Day 1

The few times I have tried it now it has been the same: Despite the late hour (2.30 a.m.) I have trouble winding down after a long night of intense mind work. The new experience for me is that this time I am not shortstacked, and I have several chances to make it further into the tournament.

82 players (I think) registered for the main event, and I had a tough table right off the bat: Humberto Brenes in seat 9, I in seat 2 (9-handed or less all day), a really strong Swedish pro (Lasse) in seat 4 plus some average dudes. I started off fine, built my stack up from the starting $7,000 to $11,500 (after 3 levels of 60 minutes each), then lost 4 hands with higher pairs dominating my pocket pairs knocking me down to $5,500 (after level 4). I managed to bounce back again when I flopped a flush and got business all the way to the river from a player in love with his AK - and I was back at $11,000 when I was moved to another table.

There I was the second shortest stack!! However, after 3 hands I hit the $32,000 mark, first with catching a flush on the river with J10c. I did have second pair on the flop and both a flush and a straight draw, and my 2 opponents gave me good pot odds all the way. The very next hand I get the Kings against the biggest stack and I manage to get almost all his chips from his pocket queens. The third hand I won was against the smallest stack on the table, who went all-in on the flop despite my check limp-raise UTG with pocket rockets. NICE!!

After 6 levels I was the chip leader with 44,700 with less than 40 players left in the tourney. During level 7, the last of day 1, I lost calling a shorter stacked all-in bet holding the nut flush draw and an overcard, but didnĀ“t get any help. Luckily in the last hand I played I got most of it back from him when I caught another flush on the flop and managed to conceal it well enough for him to call me all the way to the river.

I am not the biggest stack in the tourney, but probably in top 4 before play commences tomorrow Friday at 7 p.m. with 30 players left. The final table will be 9-handed and prizes range from $8,000 to $61,000 - hopefully I will get there this time around
